Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Bourdain, 2017
The portrait of Anthony Bourdain didn’t take on its full significance until after his death. At the time, I was proud of the photograph and flattered that he chose to use it as his Twitter profile picture. But after he passed, the image became something much bigger. People began using it to remember and commemorate him. I’ll never forget riding into New York City in a taxi, looking up on Delancey Street, and seeing the entire side of a building covered in a graffiti rendering of the portrait. That’s the fascinating thing about photography: sometimes you don’t fully understand the weight of an image until years later. There’s something haunting, almost foreboding, about this particular portrait. It possesses a sense of intimacy and humanity that’s difficult to put into words, which represents everything that made me want to become a photographer in the first place. Photography has the singular ability to capture a fleeting moment that, with time, can come to mean so much more.
